Top 5 Plumbing Emergencies (and How to Prevent Them)
Sewer backups, burst pipes, overflowing toilets and more: what to watch for and what to do first when plumbing trouble strikes.
Plumbing emergencies rarely pick a convenient time. A little knowledge goes a long way toward keeping a bad day from turning into an expensive one. Here are the five problems we get called about most, and what you can do about each.
1. Sewer or Main Line Backups
When several drains slow down or back up at once, or the lowest drain in the house gurgles or overflows, the main line is usually blocked. Roots, grease buildup, and aging pipe are the usual causes.
Stop using water in the house and call for help right away — every flush and shower adds to the backup.
2. Burst or Leaking Pipes
A burst pipe can release a surprising amount of water in minutes. Know where your main water shutoff is and how to turn it (usually clockwise). Shutting it off first limits the damage while you wait for a plumber.
3. Overflowing Toilets
If a toilet is about to overflow, lift the tank lid and press the flapper down to stop the flow, then close the shutoff valve behind the toilet. If it keeps happening, or other fixtures are affected, the problem is deeper in the line.
4. Water Heater Failure
No hot water is inconvenient. Water pooling around the heater is urgent. If you see a leak, shut off the water supply to the heater and the gas or power to it, then call a plumber.
5. Severe Kitchen Drain Clogs
A kitchen sink that won't drain is the classic holiday-dinner disaster. Grease, food scraps, and soap residue build up over time. Avoid chemical drain cleaners, which can damage pipes, and call for professional clearing.
How to Prevent Most of Them
- Keep grease, wipes, and food scraps out of drains
- Schedule a camera inspection if a line has clogged more than once
- Replace water heaters and supply lines that are old or corroded
- Learn where your main water shutoff is before you need it
